Plumb Elementary 2nd Grade Teacher
When my own children were young, I left a business career as Purchasing Agent at GTE (Verizon now) to enter the wonderful world of teaching, I obtained my Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of South Florida in 1991 and have been teaching in Pinellas County Schools for 17 years. I taught at Calvin Hunsinger SED Center for three years. Hunsinger is a school for severely emotionally disturbed and during my time there I learned quite a bit about behavior modification and management. Next, I joined a strong teaching force at Curtis Fundamental School where I taught a 4th/5th grade combination class for four years. I came to Plumb Elementary in 1999 and taught 4th grade for two years before becoming a first grade teacher. During the 2004-2005 school year I was honored as a finalist for Pinellas County's Outstanding Teacher. I am proud to say I am a National Board Certification Early Childhood Professional Educator. I am an advid grant writer and have achieved more that $79,000 worth of grants during my time in the school system.
This is the start of my fourth year teaching 2nd grade, and I am currently working on my masters. I absolutely LOVE working with these precious children. I am devoted to working with my students and their families as we focus on highest student achievement for every child. I hope I am blessed to work with you and your family this year.
I am very fortunate to have a loving, supportive husband who encourages me to pursue my dreams. Joel has decided to enter the teaching field and is teaching 8th Grade Language Arts and Science at Osceola Middle School. We have two cute little white West Highland Terrier. Mariah and Darby make us smile every day.
Together we have six children. His three grown children all live in the Boston area and are doing quite well.
My three children are spread around the country. My oldest daughter, Heather, and her husband, Bryan, are the proud parents of Tyler Michael Hartney who was born on September 16, 2005. They live in Columbia, SC. Both Heather and Bruan protected our freedom by serving in the Army and going off to Iraq during the first year in the war against terrorism. They have made us very proud, but I'm certainly glad to have them back safe and sound.
Kimberly lives in Indianapolis and has a beautiful little girl named Kylie Ann. Kylie was born on April 4, 2005. Kim is a animal groomer at "You Dirty Dog". (We love the name!
Patrick is a Sophomore at Pasco Hernando Jr. College. He lives on a ten acre range with five horses and brings joy to our life. We love his enthusiasm for life!
I learned more about teaching through my children than I could ever hope to learn in books. I hope my compassion for the work it takes to be a parent comes through in everything I do with my families.
A Life Well-Lived, The Mel Salter Story
This is a picture of my parents as we celebrated my graduation from USF (Go Bulls!). My mother, Kitty Salter, was my greatest inspiration and encouraged me to enter the teaching field. After she passed away in 2003, my other two sisters and I encouraged my father to "tell his story". He did and the above link will take you to a site where you can see his book. Just do a search under Barbara Gurian or Mel Salter. (He's now on "tour" at local libraries, churches, and civic organizations.) At 83... he's going strong and we're all so proud!
Take a look at my precious grandchildren, Kylie and Tyler. They are the joy of my life!! Now that I finally know how to upload pictures... watch out. There will be lots of my grandchildren soon!
Here's Kylie on her 2nd Birthday.
Doesn't he just melt your heart!
