The mission of the third-grade team is to help our students learn third-grade material, prepare for the 2008 FCAT test, and create an atmosphere fostering highest student achievement in a safe learning environment. We will do this by team planning, communicating goals, sharing ideas, implementing best practices, and respecting the diverse needs of our students.

We strive to create a safe and nurturing learning environment so we may meet the needs of all learners. Our expectations are high for all students. To meet the goals of our mission, we provide a variety of activities: technology, small group work, individual reading and writing conferences, and center time to help our students make gains in all academic areas. We love hearing from the parents of our students. Our doors are always open and we encourage you to actively participate in your child's education here at South Ward. Please feel free to contact us with your questions, comments, or concerns. Without a doubt the greatest gift you can give to your child is your time. During the time you spend with your child, we encourage you to spend it engaged in some sort of reading activity. Children who read at home and are read to by a parent or caregiver, tend to experience greater success across the academic spectrum.
Timed and Repeated Reading Passages Your child's third-grade teacher may have assigned repeated reading passages for your child to do as nightly homework. The purpose of repeated reading passages is to help your child become a more fluent and efficient reader. Fluency and efficiency are important skills in reading. A fluent reader understands and comprehends text at faster rates and with greater depth. This leads to a better understanding of what's read and increased learning takes place. Here at South Ward, we measure your child's fluency reading rate several times throughout the year through DIBELS assessment. As the year progresses, the fluency expectation increases in terms of correct words read per minute (CWPM).

If you would like more information on how DIBELS assessments are used at South Ward, please contact our Reading First coach, Laurel Peters .
