“JUST FOR THE FUN OF IT”
Please remember to write your child’s name in their jackets and sweaters. Many jackets are left outside at PE. We always bring in the ones left at the end of the day and have a lost and found collection outside the PE office in Building #3.
Along with our Physical Education Program, we are fortunate to have the opportunity to join in the Fuel Up To Play 60 program. This program supports healthy eating and encourages 60 minutes of activity every day. Through this grant we are able to enhance our PE program and provide additional physical activity and nutritional events.
Soon we will begin practicing skills that will be performed at our annual Spring Fling. This is a time for the entire student body, all staff, parents, and community friends to gather together outside on the PE field for a performance from each grade level. Dance, parachute, ball skills, and hula hoop routines will be presented along with jump rope, pogo sticks, stilts and more. This is about and hour long event and everyone will have a great time; so plan to attend on March 23rd from 9:00 – 10:15am. -------------------------------------------------
We are excited to introduce our Fuel Up To Play 60 newsletter that will be coming out in mid February. Currently this year our school has been awarded $3500.00 for this program which is sponsored by the NFL and the Dairy Council of Florida.
January was declared “Veggie Month” at San Jose. Students were given a veggie calendar to record every vegetable they ate each day. On January 19th we had a veggie tasting event. Each student was offered a small sample of several raw vegetables to taste. We had about 73% of our students participate in this.
February is our “Fruity Month”. Students have received a February fruity calendar to record every fruit that they eat this month. We are planning to have a fruit tasting opportunity on Tuesday, Feb. 21st. After each FUTP 60 activity we survey students on the event. This gives us some data as to the success and effectiveness of the program.
At this time we are planning the emphasis for March to be dairy consumption. We are trying to focus on one of the food groups contained in the new “My Plate” nutritional guide and expose our students to good healthy food choices.
We are continuing to offer our FUTP 60 Before School Wake Up Activity Time every Tuesday & Thursday mornings from 8:00am – 8:25. Along with the activities offered, we now have included a walking club. We started this the beginning of January and as of the end of the month the students have completed 104 miles! ---------------------------------------------------- Probably our #1 goal is making sure all students are safe during their PE class. The weather is very unpredictable, so we always pay very close attention to weather reports: heat, rain & lightening, and of course snow conditions! If it is only raining we attempt to still get the students outside under our covered court for movement activities. We have water ALWAYS available outside for the students and we stress often to them to keep hydrated. For the first few weeks of school we plan low level activities and our classes are in shaded areas.
Speaking of safety, parents, you can really help us out in insuring safety in PE by making sure your child wears tennis shoes everyday they have PE. (PreK – 2nd grade everyday; 3rd – 5th graders 3 days a week).Girls should always wear shorts under their skirts or dresses and please make sure your child’s pants are secure on their waist so they don’t have to hold them up when participating.
We promise to provide your children a comprehensive, low competitive, moderate to vigorous level Physical Education experience. Our objective is to teach skills with the goal of promoting LIFE LONG physical activity. We desire for your children to learn skills that will build confidence in their abilities provided in a safe learning environment emotionally, physically, and academically. That just means we want our students to have FUN!
----------------- Just a few reminders that were mentioned in the PE information letter: • Students are encouraged to bring a plastic water bottle containing plain water to PE class. • Students need to have safe clothing in accordance with Pinellas County Student Policies: sneaker type shoes (no sandals, hard soled shoes, or boots); pants secured at the waist & shorts worn under dresses or skirts. • If your student needs to be excused for a day, please send a note to the PE teachers. After three days excused, a doctor’s note is necessary • We cannot, for safety reasons, allow students to wear sweat shirts, sweaters, jackets and other outer wear during the hot months of the school year.
Thank you for the opportunity to teach your children. |
