Thurgood Marshall Fundamental Middle School opened in a brand new facility in the 2003-2004 school year. As a fundamental school, Thurgood Marshall emphasizes academic excellence, parental involvement, including required parent attendance at monthly meetings, monitoring and signing of homework and support of the fundamental school philosophy. Fundamental school students are expected to complete nightly homework, to show self-discipline and responsibility, and to adhere to a dress code beyond that in a traditional school. Communication between the school and the home is a strong point of a fundamental school. The commitment to education by the student, family and school staff is expected to result in high student achievement. Make Thurgood Marshall your fundamental choice.

Dear parents,

Thurgood Marshall, Osceola High and the Dalí Museum are teaming up to present “Fundamentally Surreal,” a program which pairs students from the two schools with paintings in the Dalí Museum. Each of Osceola’s sixteen AP Art History students will be paired with a student from Thurgood Marshall. Each pair of students will become an expert on the same painting in the Salvador Dalí Museum. Then, on the evening of Wednesday, March 7, the Dalí Museum will open its doors to five of each student’s family and friends and the staffs of the two schools for a free student-led introduction to the strange and beautiful world of Salvador Dalí. This rare opportunity will give students a chance to learn about at least one Dalí work in depth. It is also great fun, and a chance for students to show their knowledge to their friends, family, and teachers.

Dalí Museum Education Director Peter Tush is organizing the Fundamentally Surreal program. Our schedule is below:

Wednesday, February 8- 3:30-5:30 PM- Students will gather at the museum where Mr. Tush will give an overview of Dalí’s art and a brief introduction to each painting, along with tips for being a successful docent. Students will pair up by painting and receive information about their painting to study. Pizza and drinks will be provided.

Wednesday, February 22- 3:30-5:30- Students will rehearse with their partners and present their talk to the rest of the group. Pizza and drinks will be provided.

Wednesday, March 7- 4:30-9:00- Fundamentally Surreal night- Students will gather at 4:30 for final rehearsal with their partners; doors open at 6:00. Students should dress to impress. On this occasion the museum is allowing photographs of students with their paintings in the galleries without flash. Students will receive a Fundamentally Surreal certificate, a Dalí moustache, and a group portrait along the DNA helix stairway in the lobby. Pizza and drinks will be provided.

Students will get their own transportation to the Dali Museum (One Dali Blvd., St. Petersburg FL, 33701) since it is after school hours. Also, they will need to return the attached permission slip in order to participate in the program.

We are very fortunate to have Mr. Tush and the Dalí Museum give us this exciting opportunity. Thurgood Marshall students and the Osceola AP Art History class of 2010 were the first Fundamentally Surreal participants, and everyone involved had a wonderful time. We are also fortunate to work with such excellent students.

Here’s to a surreally good time at the Dalí!

Peter Hynes, and
