A NOTE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year at Largo Middle School, home of the Tigers! The Largo Middle School staff is excited to be sharing new experiences and endeavors with our students and their families as we begin our new school year. As always, the core values of Largo Middle School are respect and responsibility. We take pride in our students who exude these characteristics as we know that by caring about themselves and others they will find personal success that will positively impact our school and the greater community.
This year our staff is focused on finding ways to engage our students in their learning so they are not only excited about gaining new knowledge, but also learn how they can impact their own and others’ lives. In an effort to achieve this goal Largo Middle School is now an AVID school, an RTI school, a Pinellas County School for Literacy and a Lastinger/Helios school. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is a program designed to prepare students to participate in a college preparatory program. We will be using many of the AVID strategies school wide in an effort to support all our students to achieve at their greatest potential. We have also been chosen to work with our state and local Response to Intervention (RTI) teams that will support our staff to use data to successfully drive our instruction. The Lastinger Institute will be working with our staff on using hands on and creative learning methods. Literacy education will be woven throughout all of our content areas as this is a key component of having a successful future!
Families are the foundation of any child’s success. WE NEED YOU! Please be involved not only by having nightly conversations about what your child is learning, but also by participating in our Parent Teacher Student Association, our School Advisory Committee, or by volunteering for a myriad of jobs that need to be done to best support all of our students. Make sure to have your child read to you daily and make sure you ask them questions about what they have read! And please always read our newsletters so you can stay informed. We are continuing to be a green school, so please look for our newsletter on our website.
The 2011-2012 school year is going to be a great one. I am looking forward to getting to know all of our new students and catching up with our returning students. More importantly, I am excited about sharing new experiences together that will help each and every student achieve their greatest potential so they can soar! Looking forward to a successful year!
