Our reading curriculum is Harcourt. We are a Title 1 school and receive funding from the national government. With this funding we have the privilege of employing some of the best paraprofessionals in the state to assist with our small group guided reading. We also emphasize the study of vocabulary which assists in fluency and comprehension.
Our reading curriculum focuses on the following areas:
- Predicting
- Main idea
- Author's purpose

Teachers at Fairmount Park teach writing daily. It is usually our strongest subject on standardized tests. Our students learn how to write many forms including poetry, narrative, expository, research reports, and many more. We incorporate rich literature into our mini-lessons to allow students the opportunity to listen to how professional writing sounds.
We teach our students to:
- Pre-write
- Draft a "sloppy copy"
- Revise the draft for content
- Edit the draft for grammar and spelling
- Publish the piece for an audience
