Program Description |
The Pinellas Regional Juvenile Detention Center is a cooperative program between the Department of Juvenile Justice and the School Board of Pinellas County, Florida. The program provides a short-term educational program for children that are detained pending court action. The detention school program maintains communication with the child’s home school, offers regular school courses, and reconnects the at risk or dropout youth to school and learning. The detention center has 10 classrooms, a computer lab and physical education.
The purpose of the detention program is to provide a short-term physically restrictive, safe and humane environment for children who are detained pending court action. The program must meet all children’s nutritional, emotional, educational, recreational, hygienic, and physical needs while in detention. The school program maintains communication with the student’s home school, offers regular school courses, and introduces alternative activities for the unsuccessful child. The ultimate goal is to reintegrate all children into the school system so that they may graduate.
