Dropout Prevention |
Dropout Prevention School is a public school in Pinellas County District. It serves students in three teen parent, six Juvenile Justice, two discipline and two educational alternative programs.

Pinellas County Schools provides the facility for only three of these programs; the others are made available through agreements with community agency partners, Department of Juvenile Justice and Department of Children and Families. The annual enrollment averages between 4,000 and 5.000 students. The daily enrollment averages 1,000 Pre-K through 12th grade students. Eight of the seventeen sites in Dropout Prevention School are Department of Juvenile Justice Programs with a 240 instructional day calendar. The summer session includes 44 days of instruction.
During the 2004-2005 school year, students in Dropout Prevention School continued to enter programs significantly below grade level in the academic areas of reading, math, and writing. Approximately sixty-five percent of Dropout Prevention School's regular diploma students were behind in reading averaging two years below grade level. Over eight of ten are behind in math, averaging three and a half years below grade level. Writing scores are almost two points lower than the county average. Nine out of ten special diploma students are below grade level in reading and math averaging approximately four and one-half years behind. In writing, special diploma students scored almost two points below the county average.
A significant percentage of Dropout Prevention School students show and increase from pre to post test scores in reading, math, and writing. The 2004-2005 data indicated average increases are one grade level in reading and math and a one point increase in writing scores for regular diploma students. Special diploma students achieved an increase of two grade levels for reading and one for math.
Dropout Prevention School is unique in composition and location serving students in much the same way as a traditional school. The main office is housed at the Pinellas County Administration Office, 301 4th St. S.W. Largo. Daily communications is maintained through email annoucements, phone and fax with support staff, specialists and administrators. All sites have a pony route to receive district mail. Specialists are at the program sites on an ongoing basis. Some students are transported to school by school bus and receive food service from district food service.
