What links us together? There are numerous special programs, projects and people at Clearview Elementary, all of which helps link the school together. On a daily basis our students are reading and/or checking out books at our library, using Reading Counts, and working one-on-one with our ESP teachers, or with our specialist on the the Reading First Grant. They also have the chance to get knighted by a fictional character called the Word Wizard if they can read the appropriate word list for their level. They could be working on art projects, working with music, excercising, playing and learning at P.E. They are using computers for several different programs, some of which include Read 180, FCAT Explorer, Breakthrough to Literacy, Harcourt Math or Destination Reading or Math. They could be talking with our in-house Hi-Five representative, our Guidance Counselor or Social Worker. They could be working on special projects with our Title I fascilitator or assistants, in and out of the classrooms. Our in-house Volunteer Coordinator works with getting business partnerships, community help, and assigns tutors and/or helpers within the schools needs. There are so many special people working within Clearview Elementary on an every day basis, that we feel we have created an environment that is positive and conducive to learning, molded specifically for every childs needs.
Please feel free to browse down or on other pages to find a more thorough explanation of some of these special people and more information on their programs.

Title I-What is Title I Contact Pat Bell Title I is the nation’s largest federal aid program for elementary and secondary schools. Schools qualify based on the percentage of students in the free and reduced lunch program. The purpose of Title I is to provide “extra” educational services for these students. Clearview’s Title I funds are used to improve the educational program of the entire school. A well trained staff of four Teaching Partners* provides students with extra in classroom support. Funds are also used to upgrade technology, buy classroom libraries, classroom instructional materials and teacher support materials. Clearview’s Title I program has a strong family involvement component. We provide parent workshops, a Kindergarten transition program, and the parent-student-teacher compact. Brochures on a wide variety of school topics are available for parents in the Title I Office. Funds are also used to provide a part-time social worker, Mrs. Sherri Musco to act as a liaison between parents and school. Mrs. Pat Bell, the Title I Facilitator oversees the program at Clearview. She provides appropriate training opportunities for teachers, support staff, and families and supervises the Teaching Partners. Her responsibilities also include monitoring and documenting the progress of all struggling students at Clearview. Please feel free to contact us at any time. *Teaching Partners

Word Wizard Contact Lisa Pastorius Clearview Word Wizards It’s amazing that the same 300 words make up 65% of children’s reading text. Knowing these 300 words automatically, or by sight, can increase children’s reading fluency and comprehension. As an incentive to learn these words, and others like them, Clearview has a new staff member. It’s the Word Wizard! The Word Wizard is a fictional character who will visit Clearview to encourage students to practice and learn their reading sight words. Each child in grades Kindergarten through 5th is receiving an appropriate grade level list of words to learn to read. Your child’s list is attached to this newsletter. Save this list! Many of these words are irregularly spelled and will require practice at home. The Word Wizard will cheer and encourage our students to do just that! Making flash cards out of index cards or pieces of paper, with one word on each, would be helpful. Once your child has practiced the words at home sufficiently and thinks that he/she can read all the words on the list, they will be checked at school. If they can read each word within three seconds each, they will be “knighted” as official Word Wizards themselves, by the Word Wizard, and receive a certificate of recognition. Their photo will also appear (with parental approval), on a special display here at school honoring all our “Word Wizards.” Please help your child become a Clearview Word Wizard and a better reader by helping him/her practice a few of these words each night. Be on the lookout, in the next newsletter, for games you can play at home to help your child learn these important words. |
