Art Essential Learnings

The Essential Learnings are Pinellas County Schools visual arts core curriculum based on the Sunshine State Standards.

Kindergarten 1. I use a variety of drawing and painting tools with different materials. 2. I can tear, cut fold and glue. 3. I can create forms from clay and paper. 4. I use a variety of art tools and materials appropriately and safely. 5. I follow clean up directions. 6. I can name different lines, shapes, colors and textures. 7. I can create a repeating pattern 8. I can create pictures from my imagination or from real life and they can tell a story. 9. I know that people can express themselves visually. 10. I look at and can talk about art from other peoples, times, and places. 11. I can tell the difference between a real object and a work of art. 12. I can talk about art works using art words. 13. I look and listen appropriately during art presentations and museum visits. 1st Grade 1. I use a variety of drawing and painting tools and techniques with different materials. 2. I can tear, cut, fold, curl, fringe and glue two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of art. 3. I can create forms from clay using additive and subtractive techniques. 4. I use a variety of art tools and materials appropriately and safely. 5. I follow clean up directions. 6. I can name and use different lines, shapes, colors and textures. 7. I can name and use pattern, repetition and balance. 8. I can recognize and use good craftsmanship. 9. I can create pictures from my imagination or from real life and they can tell a story. 10. I know that people can express ideas & feelings visually in different ways. 11. I can explain choices in my artwork. 12. I understand that artists create works based on their life experiences. 13. I can talk about art works using elements of art and principles of design. 14. I look and listen appropriately during art presentations & museum visits. 2nd Grade 1. I can expand my drawing and painting skills by using a variety of techniques. 3. I can create artworks using mixed media and/or fiber techniques. 4. I can create forms from clay using additive and subtractive techniques. 5. I use a variety of art tools and materials appropriately and safely. 6. I consistently follow directions and clean up procedures. 7. I can recognize, assess and use good craftsmanship through practice. 8. I can create pictures from personal experience, observation or my imagination in a variety of subjects. 9. I can explain my ideas and intentions in my artwork. 10. I can plan and organize the elements of art and principals of design to express my ideas. 11. I understand the impact that history and culture have on a work of art. 12. I can critique artworks using the proper vocabulary. 13. I understand how artists’ creations influence many aspects of my life. 14. I can recognize and identify how an artist has created a work of art. 4th Grade 1. I create art works by using drawing, painting, printmaking, fibers, sculpture and ceramic materials. 2. I am developing my drawing techniques with a variety of media. 3. I am developing painting techniques using various color concepts. 4. I use clay techniques such as relief, pinch and coil construction. 5. I use art tools and materials and processes responsibly, appropriately and safely. 6. I consistently follow directions and clean up procedures. 7. My artwork demonstrates knowledge of how the elements of art affect the principles of design. 8. I can recognize, assess and use good craftsmanship. 9. I create art works from my imagination, observations and my own experiences. 10. I use a variety of thematic subject matter in my art. 11. I can explain intentions in my artwork. 12. I select, modify, edit and organize design elements and principles to communicate my idea. 13. I compare and contrast works of art from different time periods and cultures. 14. I know that works of art show historical and cultural values. 15. I can develop personal ideas for making decisions about art using appropriate vocabulary words. 16. I understand that artists’ creations, both functional and non-functional are all around me and influence my life. 5th Grade 1. I create art works by using drawing painting, printmaking, fibers, sculpture and ceramic materials. 2. I expand and improve my drawing and painting techniques using a variety of media. 3. I can create forms from clay using additive and subtractive techniques plus slab and coil construction. 4. I use a variety of art tools, materials and processes responsibly, appropriately and safely. 5. I consistently follow instructions and clean up procedures. 6. I can describe and apply how the elements and principles of art impact a work of art. 7. I use and assess qualities of good craftsmanship in creating two and three-dimensional works of art. 8. I use personal experience, observation and imagination to create works of art. 9. I use a variety of themes, subjects and symbols to create works of art. 10. I can explain and defend my choices in personal works of art. 11. I can compare and contrast works of art based on styles, eras, cultures and/or artists. 12.
