Visual Art at Perkins Elementary
Why are the Arts Important?

The mission of the art programs at Perkins Elementary is to promote and sponsor instruction and activities that encourage the appreciation, study and performance of the arts.
Along with regular academics, students have Visual Art, Instrumental and Vocal Music, Dance, Theater and Spanish with specialist instructors.

Children have visual art class once a week. In the 4th and 5th grade they may select an additional "Focus" class in one of the "specials".

Visual Art classes at Perkins are unique in Pinellas County schools. Class sizes are small, dividing between several art instructors.

Students have enhanced experiences in all art mediums building skills in painting, drawing, mixed media, sculpture, working with clay, printing on the press. They learn about world cultures and history through their studies in the art classroom.
Perkins students have many opportunites to display their art works in the community.
You might ask why are the arts are important for your child. Here are a few of my perspectives...

*Art experiences are fun! Children are eager to participate and create.

*Experiences in the arts prepare our children for the future by helping them to think outside the "box". Children become creative thinkers. Art challenges help children learn that there many ways to solve problems!

*Art experiences engage children in problem solving using the full variety of human intelligences. No child is left behind.

*Art explores human values, feelings and sensibilities. It promotes critical thinking.

*Art classes promote global, cultural and historical awareness and understanding.

*Success in the arts produces a positive self image.
