Read Books Together The importance of reading together: Older children also love to read books together with their parents, grandparents, or older and younger brothers and sisters. Before you read, discuss some of the pictures, hard words, or background knowledge of the subject. During reading, everyone can take turns reading aloud and asking/answering questions. MAKE REAL-LIFE CONNECTIONS, ALSO. After reading, you can do writing activities or have discussions. Depending on the subjects involved, you may even do an outing such as a movie on the same subject. |

QARs Click here for "kimskorner4teachertalk.com" and a wonderful explanation: Question Answer Relationships (QARS) is another CRISS strategy to help you when reading and answering questions. Here are two types where answers are found right in the reading selection: RIGHT THERE: These answers are easy to find because they are usually in one place "right there" in the text. THINK AND SEARCH: You have to look for the answers in more than one place in a reading selection. You can find examples of these in the FCAT Reading test practices that we do here at school as well as in our READ XL textbook. |

Write and read your own stories or articles together.
After reading stories or articles, many students generate ideas of their own for writing. Encourage your child to create stories and/or articles on subjects they know about like baseball, gymnastics, cooking, skateboarding, etc. Then enjoy reading these together or have your child read his/her creative work to you. This is a great activity for family fun.
