Keeping Your Family Safe on the Internet: Your Eyes Are Like Windows.... |
No matter what any of us think about the Internet, we must accept the fact that it is here to stay and expand. In the future, it may not look exactly as it does today, but it will be around in form or another.
Almost everyone will be on the Internet in the in the coming years. Even if we don’t have an Internet connection in our home, our children will be exposed to it at school, the library or a friend’s house. The following is a ten-step plan to review with your family to ensure their safety (and your piece of mind) when on line.
Copy this list and keep it near your computer.
1. My parents and I will set up family Internet rules. We will decide on what time of day I can use the Internet and what areas are appropriate for me to visit.
2. I will not give out personal information about my family or myself. I won’t give out my name, address, phone number, or where I go to school.
3. I will tell my parents right away if I see something that I am uncomfortable with.
4. I will never meet with someone I met on-line without checking with my parents first.
5. I will let my parents know about the sites I visit online and the people on line that I talk to. I understand it is important for them to know where I’m spending my time.
6. I will never send anyone a picture of me, or anyone else in my family without checking with my parents first.
7. I will never respond to a message that is mean or makes me feel uncomfortable. I know it is not my fault if I get a message like that.
8. I will not download software without first asking my parents if it is all right. I know these programs could contain a virus.
9. I will not give out a credit card number unless my parents know the site is secure and know something about the company. I will, at least, make sure the company I am sending my credit card to has an address and telephone number listed on their site.
10. I will supervise my children’s activities on-line. From time to time, I will review my computer Internet history, making sure my children are not being subjected to inappropriate materials.
