Each Wednesday, we have Reading Day in Social Studies. To learn about events occurring around the world, we write about what we read from the St. Petersburg Times or the Internet. |

Newspapers are delivered every day. Click here for the Newspapers In Education link. Our class has St. Petersburg Times newspapers donated every day. Students are encouraged to take a copy or a section with them to read later, use for another class assignment, or project. |

What is going on in the world around us?
Students find a news article about the areas of the world we study in 6th grade geography. They cut out an interesting article and staple it to the notebook paper. Students write or type answers to these questions:
1. Write the title of the article you chose to read. 2. Where did this happen? 3. When did this happen? 4. Write a summary. (4-5 sentences) 5. Write the name of the newspaper or magazine where the article was written. 6. Develop 2 questions you have about the article. OR Give your opinion about the article’s topic.
Students are instructed to staple this procedure into their planners.

WebCurrents takes students on an online journey of discovery to the best educational sites on the Web, all of which are tied closely with a significant news event that week. Lessons end with a newspaper-themed activity that students can complete online or offline with a current issue. 21 news agencies from markets all across the U.S. are currently using WebCurrents to encourage Internet learning. |
