Articles and Information About Social Networking Websites

With the recent gain in popularity of "Social Networking" websites, such as MySpace.com and others, both students and parents need to have the information to make informed, safe, and ethical decisions about their online choices.

This collection of articles, broadcasts, and related links is intended to be used as a resource for families to help them stay informed, and to create a dialogue between parents, teachers and students about the benefits and consequences that are inherit in using online networking sites.

It is the goal of Southside Fundamental Middle School to provide our students with the safest possible environment in which to learn and grow as responsible community members. We believe that this is achieved through education, and that given the proper tools, support, guidance and family involvement, our students will make responsible choices about their citizenship in all communities, including those in cyber-space.

We hope that this resource is helpful. If you have any questions or comments, or think that other links should be included here, please email David Dusseault, Computer Education Instructor, at
dusseaultd@pcsb.org.

Jessi Hempel of Businessweek, and Stacy Debroff, founder of the parenting group, Mom Central are featured on this radio interview clip. (Allow about 20 minutes to listen to the portion of the show dealing with the topic.)

To listen to the clip, go to the website above and click the "Listen" icon under the name of the clip ("MySpace Invaders"). You will need to have Real Player loaded on your computer. If you need to download the free player, click the "Get Real Player" link at the bottom of this page.

(Note: If the clip won't play, I have had better luck using the Direct Listen Link located near the bottom of the webpage.)

This comprehensive resource list of sites on a variey of topics, including social networking sites, internet predators, privacy, internet terminology, and many other related topics, is provided by the Campus Police, as presented to the PTSA on March 6, 2006.

Be sure to select the Free Basic Player, every time you are asked. (It isn't always the default choice.)

Be sure to also deselect any install choices you don't want. There are a bunch, so keep with it.
