Writing Expectations for Fifth Grade

Mrs. Acerra's Writing Expectations


Students entering fifth grade are required to meet certain expectations in all written and typed work. Students should already be utilizing the following expectations in their writing assignments.

Capitalization
o Capitalize the first word in every sentence.
o Capitalize names of people, places, and things (proper nouns).
o Capitalize the pronoun I.
o Capitalize abbreviated titles (Mrs., Dr.).

Punctuation
o Every sentence needs ending punctuation (!, ?, or .).
o Use a comma between cities and states.
o Use a comma in a series.
o Use quotation marks correctly.

Spelling
o Check spelling against class lists, spelling books, dictionary, etc..
o Watch out for words with many spellings:
They’re stands for they are.
Their shows that something belongs to some people.
Use there to tell where.
It’s stands for it is.
Its shows that something belongs to something.

Sentences
o Every sentence needs a subject and a predicate.
It needs to tell who or what and the action that occurred.
o Use different sentence beginnings.
o Break run-on sentences into separate sentences.
(Pay attention to when you take breaths while reading your sentences.
If you are breathing too much during a sentence, it may be a run-on.)

Grammar
o Make sure the subject and verb agree.
“He run to the store.” Should be “He ran to the store.”

In addition, stories written in narrative or expository form, will be graded according to the following guidelines.

Format
o Your story should have a beginning, middle and end.
o The beginning should introduce the topic with a “wow.”
o The beginning should tell the setting and introduce important characters.
o The middle should give interesting and important details about the topic.
o The middle should state the problem.
o The end should say something interesting and important about the topic.
o The end should tell the solution to the problem.
