Welcome to 7th Grade Civics at Madeira Beach Fundamental Middle School
| We have an exciting year ahead as we pilot a new curriculum entitled "Civics," which will be the new required curriculum in 2012 for all 7th graders in the state of Florida. This will be our second year at Madeira Beach Fundamental piloting the curriculum. Every Pinellas County middle school will be involved this year. So my students and I are not alone in this exciting educational experience.
This summer all the piloting teachers were involved in an intense week-long series of classes at the University of Central Florida. Under the direction of professors from the University of Florida and the University of Central Florida, the teachers were introduced to the new standards for the course and received a thorough overview of the curriculum. The curriculum is so new that there will not be a textbook for the course, but all the piloting teachers have received numerous resources and complete lesson plans for the whole year. The piloting teachers will have ongoing discussions with the professors and fellow colleagues as we continue to refine the curriculum in preparation for 2012. The curriculum is based on the "new generation" standards for Civics. A copy of these standards is located in your child's Civics notebook (reference section).
